What is a Hash?

A hash is a digital fingerprint for data. Hash algorithms like SHA-256 generate a fixed-length string from any input. Identical inputs always produce the same hash, but even the smallest changes lead to a completely different result. Hashes are used for integrity verification, password storage, and in blockchain technologies. SHA-256 is one of the most widely used algorithms and is used in Bitcoin among other applications. Understanding hashing is fundamental to modern software security and data integrity.

How do I use the Hash Generator?

Enter your text in the input field and click "Generate Hashes". The generator simultaneously calculates SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 hashes. You can copy each hash individually. With the comparison function, you can enter two hash values and check whether they are identical - useful for verifying downloads or file integrity.

Why generate hashes online?

Our Hash Generator uses your browser's Web Crypto API for secure and fast calculations. All data stays local - nothing is sent to a server. You need no terminal command and no installation. The tool is ideal for developers who need to quickly calculate a hash or verify file integrity without leaving their browser or installing additional software.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is MD5 not supported?
MD5 is cryptographically broken and not part of the modern Web Crypto API. We support SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 instead.
Is my input transmitted anywhere?
No, hashing happens locally using the browser's Web Crypto API. Your input never leaves your device.
Are these hashes suitable for password storage?
No, raw SHA hashes are not enough for passwords. Use a dedicated password hashing algorithm like bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 server-side.
Why do my hashes never match between tools?
Differences are usually caused by trailing newlines or different character encodings. Make sure both inputs are byte-identical and use UTF-8.
